Soil wines

Each wine from Fontavin estate is different because of its soil.

Furthermore, soil is a special place made by the combination of natural components such as the soil, the subsoil, the relief and the climate. It’s also characterised by its biotic potential: living organisms (bacterium, worms…). Both joined they formed what we called an ecosystem.

For example, the Grenache, red grape representing 70% of the whole vineyard in Fontavin reveals superbly the types of many different types of soil. It will express itself in a different way in the wine, whether it’s cultivated on shingles or red clay of Chateauneuf du Pape (heady wine, warming and elegant) or if located 350 meters high on the limy slopes of the Dentelles de Montmirail in Gigondas (rustic wine). In our wines, 10 to 30% of other grape varieties express also, the soil, and mix to the Grenache in complexity and harmony.

Harmony with nature

We cultivate the different soils of our estate, and we respect them through our choices and our cultivation method :
- No chemical fertilizer (we favour soils bacteria lifes by contribution of bio-organic improvment of crop product)
- Plough and soil maintenance (some of our vineyards are cultivated according to bio-agriculture)
- Selection of fertilizer the least toxic for auxiliaries (such as bees…), environment and worker
- Productivity limitation (between 20 and 45 hectlitres/hectare) by removing buds at spring end and the “green harvest” according to the years
- Respect of the old vines which have low productivity but great quality (In Vacqueyras our vine are hundred years old)
- Manual crop on nearly the whole estate.

Our work philosophy

Our work philosophy is the same in our cellar :
- Hygiene: cleaning of our chais with hot water
- Traceability
- Recycling of marcs and dregs
- No wine filtration when possible
- Oenologist abilities : respect of grapes, of its potential

If we don’t cultivate our wines depending on the moon, be sure we cultivate them with our hearts (click here to see our poem).
